March 2017 Meeting

Post date: Mar 26, 2017 6:12:5 PM

Haiku Northwest held its monthly meeting on March 23, 2017 at the Bellevue Library. Tanya McDonald, our vice president, called the meeting to order, with seven other members in attendance: Connie Hutchison, Jim Bloss (attending for the first time), Ida Freilinger, Dianne Garcia, Curtis Manley, Angie Terry, and Michael Dylan Welch. After announcements and introductions, Angie brought up the plans for the Pacific Northwest regional annual meeting on June 3, which will include a haiku walk and picnic at Discovery Park with time to wander through the park’s visitor center, readings by attendees at the Magnolia library, and a workshop by Michael Dylan Welch. Curtis Manley will also read from The Crane Girl, his new children’s book (which includes haiku) and discuss how he came to write it. Following a short break, and equipped with caramels provided by Tanya for extra energy, we shared the haiku we had brought. New member Jim Bloss raised the question of what the “aha! moment” was, and how one person’s moment could be critiqued by others. This led to an interesting discussion, and showed that we each have our own thoughts on a subject very central to the writing, reading, and discussion of haiku. Our next meeting will be held on April 27 at the Kirkland Library.
