March 2019 Meeting

Post date: Mar 18, 2019 11:56:14 PM

Haiku Northwest held its March meeting on March 14, 2019 at the Bellevue Library in Bellevue, Washington. The meeting was facilitated by Michael Dylan Welch. In attendance were David Berger, Deborah Doyle, Dale Dvorak, Gary Evans, Curtis Manley, Tanya McDonald, Michelle Schaefer, Angela Terry, John Walceman, and Michael Dylan Welch. After a round of introductions (because we had three new attendees), the meeting opened with a slide presentation by Dale Dvorak of woodblock prints by Suzuki Harunobu, Katsukawa Shuncho, and Utagawa Hiroshige, each paired with haiku he had written in response to them over a thirty-day period. Following Dale’s presentation, several announcements of upcoming workshops and readings were made including the Double Vision photography and ekphrastic poetry event that Tanya and Michael are participating in on April 5 in Ellensburg, where they are also giving a poetry reading the next day for the Inland Poetry Prowl. Tanya and Michael will also give a poetry reading at Open Books on April 19 (at Seattle’s poetry-only book store). After the announcements, Michael led a discussion on randomly selected haiku from the most recent issue of Modern Haiku. We read them out loud and then discussed them, thinking about season, punctuation, format, and the effect of the name under the poem (the poem’s “fourth line”). Michael had selected every fifth and seventh haiku until he had filled up a page for his handout. After a short break, we then shared haiku we had brought. At the end of the meeting, Angie mentioned that she would be facilitating the April meeting and we were going to play with found poems.

Please note that our February 2019 meeting was cancelled because of snow.
