Joint Meeting with Haiku Northwest
and the Port Townsend Haiku Group

Haiku Northwest is pleased host its fourth joint meeting with the Port Townsend haiku group at Seattle’s Kubota Garden on Saturday, September 26, 2009. See below for our schedule. Plan to meet at the garden entrance gate at 10:45 a.m. (or come early for the garden’s regular guided tour at 10:00 a.m.). After a ginkō (haiku writing) walk around the garden, we’ll have lunch in the picnic area (please bring your own lunch). Then we’ll carpool to see the Rainier Valley Haiku sculpture nearby, and then meet for the rest of the afternoon at the Rainier Beach Library. At 6:00 p.m., we have reservations at Maya’s Mexican Restaurant nearby. We have some special activities planned, including a kukai and an anonymous workshop, and we hope you can all come! To get started, you have an assignment—to write some haiku about the theme of . . . shoes! See below for submission details as well as directions. Please come prepared for rain, although we'll do our best to schedule blue skies!

Submit Shoe Haiku

At our previous joint meeting, our haiku theme was hats. Now it’s time to write about shoes. Please submit two to five unpublished haiku or senryu about shoes or relating to shoes. Please submit your shoe poems by September 14, 2009 to Tanya McDonald at haikunw1988@gmail.com. Please type or paste poems into your email message (no attached files).

Schedule

We have a full day of events planned. We’ll be starting at 10:45 p.m., which should allow folks taking the ferry to reach us in good time. If you can’t join us at the garden, please do join us at the Rainier Beach Library. Here’s the full schedule for September 26, 2009:

10:00 a.m.     Guided tour (optional, if you want to be early)

10:45 a.m.     Meet at the entrance gate at Kubota Garden (look for the haiku of the month on the notice board)

11:00 a.m.     Start wandering the gardens for our ginkō (haiku writing walk)—remember to use your five senses!

12:15 p.m.     Gather at the picnic area near the entry gate and read a round of poems (one each, can be written at the gardens or before)

12:30 p.m.     Lunch at the picnic area. We'll hand out index cards for the kukai and the anonymous workshop.

1:30 p.m.       Depart Kubota Garden for the Rainier Valley Haiku sculpture (directions will be provided)

1:45 p.m.       Arrive at haiku sculpture (we'll have a hand-out sheet listing the poems on the sculpture)

2:00 p.m.       Leave sculpture for the Rainier Beach library (the library parking lot should have plenty of free parking)

2:15 p.m.       Arrive at library (our meeting room is the first door on the right as soon as you go in through the entrance doors to the library)

2:30 p.m.       Welcome and round of introductions

2:45 p.m.       Brief critique session on sculpture haiku

3:00 p.m.       Kukai (submit two poems written on the walk at Kubota Garden)

4:00 p.m.       Break

4:15 p.m.       Anonymous critique session with a focus on the elements of juxtaposition and season words

5:15 p.m.       Shoe haiku performance

5:35 p.m.       Final round of reading

5:45 p.m.       Clean-up

6:00 p.m.       Leave library for Maya’s Mexican Restaurant
