Annual Meeting for the Pacific Northwest Region of the Haiku Society of America

The Pacific Northwest region of the Haiku Society of America is pleased to welcome you to its 2018 annual meeting at Brightwater Center. The center features an industrial wastewater treatment facility (look for the poetry installations), plus beautiful grounds for walking, including wooded trails, a spiral lookout hill, a creek, ponds, and demonstration gardens. The visitor center includes an interactive museum and public art installations (see photos and maps below). A highlight of the weekend will be a guided educational tour of the treatment plant (hardhats and safety vests provided), plus presentations and workshops focusing on ecology and the environment. While our main activities will be on Saturday, Friday evening and Sunday activities are also planned. All events are FREE, except for a catered lunch on Saturday, and other meals.

If you plan on attending, please submit the registration form by May 25 (after this date, you can still attend, but we may not be able to guarantee a catered lunch for you). Also see below for suggested accommodations. Hope you can join us!

9:00 am Introductions, led by Angela Terry, and round of reading

9:15 am Jason Wirth — “Ecology in the Buddhist Tradition”

10:00 am Break

10:15 am Richard Tice — “Ecological Awareness in Japanese Haiku”

10:45 am Tanya McDonald — “H2O Haiku” Workshop

12:00 noon Sandwich lunch catered by PotBelly ($9 each; preorder using registration form)

1:00 pm Katelyn Hunt — “Overview of the Brightwater Treatment Plant”

1:30 pm a) Tour of Brightwater Treatment Plant for up to 25 people, closed-toe shoes required (names chosen by lottery, with a request for local people to possibly plan a tour another time)

b) Haiku Walk — explore the gardens and grounds (if not touring the plant) — see map

3:00 pm Break

3:15 pm Michael Dylan Welch — “Still Life with Oysters and Lemon: Giving Attention to Our Environment,” followed by a haiku workshop (featuring poems written on the tour or haiku walk, and other poems)

4:30 pm David Berger — “Ecology and Salmon”

5:00 pm Wrap-up
