Meeting Summary for August 28, 2014

Post date: Sep 02, 2014 6:6:25 PM

The August 28, 2014 Haiku Northwest meeting took place at Lake Forest Park Library, at Lake Forest Park, Washington. Present were Ida Freilinger, Dianne Garcia, Connie Hutchison, Herb McClees, Tanya McDonald, Michelle Schaefer, Angela Terry, and Michael Dylan Welch. After announcements, and a treasurer’s report from Dianne, Angie led us in a writing exercise using William Higginson’s book Haiku World. She selected various summer season words (kigo) to use as prompts. We each chose a random prompt from index cards and wrote haiku for about ten minutes based on our selected season words. After each of us shared our poems, Angie read about each kigo from Haiku World, including a sample poem. We filled the remainder of the meeting by sharing our own haiku and offering critique after passing out our haiku sheets. Our next meeting will be on September 25 at the Redmond City Library, with Michael Dylan Welch as our featured poet (it will also be “Bring a Friend” Day, so please think about someone you could bring as a guest).
